Can a song written as a piano & cello duet be played by other instruments?

I've heard pieces written for cello & piano transcribed for clarinet & piano and they're very effective. The cello has a mellow tone and so has the clarinet, so it won't sound too different from the original version. Personally, I would choose viola and clarinet, but it's not my wedding :-)
