Do you know more about this movie?

A scene from a movie popped into my head last night, and with very little detail, but it doesn't hurt to try! It seems this scene happened near or at the end of the movie. A man gets shot in the chest. Seems that he is a father and his child goes down after him, you know, with the normal crying and what not, that usually happens with that kind of scene. Well, the man is not dead. He kind of sits up, and pulls something out of his shirt pocket or his jacket pocket? And the something blocked/stopped the bullet, it's lodged in the object. And the object is a book, a coin, a petrified piece of tree? I don't know! Like, I said, I don't have many details. Just the vague recollection of the scene.
